Sol-Aire (segment #7107)

Teresa Garrett: Did you know that according to the Environmental Protection Agency the air in our homes and offices is 40 to 100 times more polluted than the air outside? Pollen, dust and mold in the air ducts can be especially harmful to those who suffer from allergies or breathing problems.

Now, there are a variety of air purifiers out there on the market, but today we're going to show you a whole house air purification system by Sol Aire that can improve the quality of the air you breathe. Let me show you how it works.

I've made a mockup to show you how this unit will purify the air in your home. Now this longer component on this side is an ultraviolet light, which will kill germs, mold and fungus in your air or your air ducts. The smaller component, which is here, creates ozone. Now that doesn't just mask the odors, but it completely destroys them so that your house smells better. This is activated when either your air conditioner or your furnace is turned on and air passes over this sensor. Now let me show you what I mean. The unit fits inside the air duct and is held in place on the outside by magnets. Now all you have to do is plug the unit into an electrical outlet, so there's no hard wiring involved with the installation, which makes it very easy. I've got an air filter and a fan to simulate how the air will flow through the air duct. Within a couple of minutes of the air passing through the duct, the unit is activated and starts to clean the air in your home. It needs to be installed in the cold air return to your system.

Here's the HVAC system. Now how do you determine which one is the cold air return? Well it's going to be the largest duct and also the only duct at one end while at the other end you have a lot of other smaller ducts which are going to feed the air into your house. This is going to be where we need to put it, but first we need to take this panel off just to make sure that our unit's going to fit.

All right, let's get this panel off and check this out. Okay, this is going to be the perfect place to put the unit. You've got the cold air return there, the A coil here and the furnace is right behind it.

Now it's important when you're installing the unit that the components don't touch anything around it.

So all we have left to do is just go down and cut a hole in our panel and then we can install the Sol Aire. This is where we need to make the hole in our panel because this is going to position the unit centrally between the cold air return and the A coil. Now I'm going to use a 3-inch hole saw to make this opening. All I have to do is line the bit up on my mark to make the cut. All right, that looks nice. Now let's go back up and finish the installation.

Okay, now that our panel's back in place, we can install the Sol Aire into the furnace. These are the powerful magnets that I was talking about earlier, and they're going to hold it firmly in place. Now all we have left to do is plug it in and we're done.

The Sol Aire cost around $600 and it's a very easy installation, and once it's in, you'll probably breathe a little easier knowing that the air in your home is a lot cleaner.
